I've been playing arround with Prophoto color space which has a larger gamut than srgb or adobe 1998. I know, monitors are not capable of displaying such large color spaces, bu anyway i took an experiment. The thing is, with such a large color space, you can have more data available so you should work in 16 bit, not in 8 bit. Usualy raw format has between 12 and 14 bits.
So this tells us that worlking with 8 bits as default (in camera raw) degrades us of data. It is the same as if you wold have 3 deciliters of juice and only a 2 deciliter glass. Why not use a half liter glass then? More info on color spaces click here.
